Diet soda may be linked to weight gain...  
Interesting article and something I'd wondered about. There's got to be something shady about those artificial chemical sweeteners.

I don't drink soda, but I've started to carefully watch labels for high fructose corn syrup and just plain corn syrup. It's in EVERYTHING (soup, yogurt, CRACKERS) and it messes with the way your body regulates insulin. Ugh.

I avoid that and partially hydrogenated oils. Those two ingredients are the devil and they really are in everything. I have a hard time finding bread without HFCS, at least bread my white-bread loving husband will eat.

Seriously! I had this same problem, I couldn't find a bread that didn't contain corn syrup OR MOLASSES as an ingrediant!

I'm also having a problem now where I can't find soup that either a) doesn't have corn syrup or b) doesn't taste like crap. 99% of "organic" soups taste terrible. :(
